Mastering Your Skipping Rope and Jump Rope Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide for Success

Adjusting your jump rope can be an awkward task, but it doesn't have to be!

Speed ropes can vary in shape and size depending on the brand but most follow the same process! For this tutorial, we will be using the PurposeBuilt Sustain speed rope.

If you’re unsure about what length the speed rope wire needs to be, it’s best to start a little longer and adjust it down to suit. The length you choose is dependent on individual preference but we’d recommend having your rope in the region of the chest to armpit height when standing on the rope to measure against your body.

Take a look at our simple steps below to learn how to quickly and effectively set up the length of your jump rope!

Adjusting your speed rope - step by step

  1. The sustain rope has removable end-caps that can be unscrewed to reveal an adjustment tool that will help you alter your rope to the right length. Use the adjustment tool to loosen the cable head on the inside handle only (make sure the handle that is staying fixed remains tightened)

  2. Slide the handles apart and put one foot in the middle of the cable and pull the handles up your desired length, we’d recommend between nipples and upper chest height as a good point to start at, but adjust to personal preference

  3. Use the adjustment tool to tighten the cable head firmly and secure the cable back in place

  4. Cut any excess wire with cable cutters (be sure to leave a little excess cable, around ¾ inch)

  5. Return the end cap to the bottom of the handle and tighten ready for use
